The Pyrgos Kallistis, as the entire name of the village is, was the capital of the island after the abandonment of Skaros in Imerovigli and before the transfer of Santorini’s capital to Fira. The village of Pyrgos was one of the five castles-cities of the island built in Santorini from the 13th to the 16th century to protect the inhabitants from pirate raids. The Castle of Pyrgos is the most recent of all the castle cities of the island and was built around 1580.
During the 18th century, the village of Pyrgos Kallistis has developed a very important cultural activity with the creation of the School of Thera. Today at the village of Pyrgos you will find museums, cafes, restaurants and a vibrant yet relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your holidays in Santorini, starting from your very neighbourhood.
Tip: The celebration of Good Friday in Pyrgos is among the most beautiful Easter experiences that you can live in Greece. The whole village is lightening up by the flaming cans positioned in every house, church roof and the castle’s walls.
